Foxboro Stadium was demolished in 2002

Foxboro Stadium is the home of the New England Patriots of the National Football League.

It's kind of hard to believe that an NFL team would play in a place like Foxboro Stadium. It is in the middle of nowhere, not really close to Boston, Providence or Hartford, with terrible access and bad parking. There is exactly one four-lane highway (with traffic lights) to handle the traffic from crowds of 60,000+.

The stadium is no artistic gem, being basically two really big grandstands on either side of the field that just keep sweeping up and away from the field. We sat at the top and felt like the field was in Connecticut.

The whole place had a ramshackle, temporary feel about it despite the fact that the Patriots have played there for decades. The souvenir stand was a tent in the parking lot and the lots themselves were dirt and spread over a series of interconnected hills. Clouds of dust rose as cars entered and left and people with stick shifts struggled in stop and go traffic up the steep inclines.

The most telling indication of the parking problem came when the Patriots scored midway through the 4th quarter to take a 10 point lead. There was a mass exodus as people ran, and I mean ran through the parking lots to get to their cars before the log jam began.

A bizarre place.
